In order to keep your dog trained, you need to keep him active throughout his life cycle. Dogs are not supposed to spend their lives sitting on a sofa. They need to be active, so they can be happy and healthy. Activity is important, whether it is a run through the park, running freely around a dog park or the exercises for your dog in an agility class. Make the activity consistent and stimulating for your dog.
If bad behavior suddenly starts, take your dog to a vet to eliminate health problems as the cause. Certain health conditions, or even pain, can completely change an animal's demeanor. It could even be to the point that the dog may become more aggressive and lash out at people. Because they cannot speak to let us know there is a problem, this is how they alert us to the fact that they require extra attention.
Make sure your dog understands the difference between right and wrong. This means that every member of the family must be willing to enforce these boundaries. It will instantly undo all of your hard work!
If you have a large-breed dog, he needs a big bed on which to stretch out. There are large, rectangular beds available for big dogs, or you could just get your dog a crib mattress. A crib mattress is practical because you can use fitted crib sheets that can be easily washed and replaced. Another good thing is that crib mattresses have a moisture-proof cover.
Don't use doggy treats as your sole positive reinforcement mechanism. Giving dogs treats to learn new behavior does work. You probably do not carry treats with you 365 days a year when you are not in an "official" training session. Try patting your dog on the back and giving him an "enthusiastic, that a boy."
As was already stated, many dogs are trained for many different reasons. Dogs are beloved for their loyalty and willingness to please their owners, which makes a properly trained one all the more enjoyable as a companion. Use the above advice to help your dog reach its full potential.
